Licensed Engineers were hard to come by!!!

The main reason you see quite a few Engineers and firemen is due to the hiring of extra people in the winter months.  The “Chief” had three engines, (one forward) and six boilers.  The forward engine was not used in the summer months and was disconnected.  Only 4 boilers were used during the summer months.  When ice conditions warranted, usually the end of December, the remaining two boilers were lit off and the forward engine was re-connected and three extra people were hired for the 3 month operation of ice breaking, one engineer, one fireman and one oiler.  These people were not steady employees and sometimes it was difficult finding these extras as they had to be licensed and certified.  Robert T. Tamlyn (Chief on the “Chief” from about 1974 to 1978)
