My father was captain on the Chief! Robert Tamlyn, my brother was Chief engineer, my husband was a fireman and my little brother also worked on there!! So knowing that a part of the ship is being saved means a lot to me!!!
The Ships Crew List shows (Robert E. Tamlyn 1968 – 70) as a Master. It shows (Robert T. Tamlyn 1975 – 79) as an Engineer. Please tell me who was who and also what is your husbands name with middle initial and was his only job a fireman. Also what is your younger brothers name with middle initial and what was his job title.
I’m making a Master Crew List, so I need to know all the little details.
Thanks, Doug Taylor
I am Robert T. Tamlyn and I was Chief on the “Chief” from about 1974 to 1978. I had a total of about 15 years on the “Chief”, starting as a coal passer in the winter of 1964. My father, Robert E. was the Captain until his untimely passing in1970. My brother Mike, worked as a fireman and my brother-in-law, Kevin McLean also worked on the “Chief” as a fireman.
I am really excited to see that something will be done with this engine as far as preserving it and some local history. I have assisted the Wisconsin Maritme Musem in Manitowoc with their restoration of the forward engine off the “Chief” and if I can be of any help to you, let me know.
